ABOUT

Our Story

Founder Brooklyn Milner never imagined herself as a therapist during her academic years.

Working in an inpatient psychiatric hospital for 5 years, she witnessed the revolving door of acute units where the lasting change she hoped for her patients was often impossible to see. Burnt out, Brooklyn stepped away for hip surgery and realized she needed both a new challenge and chapter.

Testing the waters, she ventured into therapy with a brief tour with Veterans Affairs as a case manager before transitioning to a private practice - there she found herself enamored with her work and its impact. What began as part-time evenings and weekends quickly evolved to prime-time.

Diving into the field head first, Brooklyn immersed herself in self-study and sought both training and specialized education to refine her unique approach to psychotherapy. In September 2023, Brooklyn took the leap and founded Beacon Psychotherapy, the bespoke mental health practice in downtown Charleston here to guide you through the swells and ebbs of life transitions, relationships, anxiety, depression and trauma.

Believing in the power of self-discovery as the path to healing, Brooklyn built Beacon Psychotherapy as a haven for individuals to explore their inner selves in a safe, supportive environment. The name "Beacon" reflects her philosophy: embracing both the lightness and darkness of the human experience, honoring every facet of our being and learning to find balance. Inspired by her love for Star Wars, the name also holds a subtle nod to the interplay of light and shadow in our lives.

Serving adult men and women across the Lowcountry, Beacon Psychotherapy is on a mission to provide a safe therapeutic space for clients to reflect on their past and present experiences, using evidence-based treatments to pave the way towards a healthier future.

Guided by core values of exploration, curiosity, kindness, ownership, compassion, resilience, collaboration, empathy, commitment, and professional duty, Brooklyn and the Beacon Psychotherapy team are here to help you honor your past, empower your present and find your most promising path forward.
